Keith Burge, DVM
Veterinarian
Why did you first become a veterinarian?
I have wanted to become a veterinarian since a very young age. I grew up with my childhood cat, Maggie, a stray that found my family when I was only 4 years old and became a beloved member of the family all the way through my college years. I wanted others to be able to have the type of companionship that I had with Maggie. I committed myself to learning how to care for animals to promote the bond people share with their animals. That continues to drive me to treat every patient like they were my own pet.
Why did you decide to become a practice owner?
When the opportunity to become an owner at WVH arose, I knew I had to take the chance to build upon the incredible foundation Dr. Wilson had started. Wilson Veterinary Hospital was my first job out of veterinary school, and it has always felt like home – from the clients and patients we see, to the coworkers I have grown up with, and the mentorship I received from the other doctors in the practice. Dr Wilson is an inspiration to me, and being able to continue and expand his model of affordable emergency, advanced, and preventative medicine is something I strive for every day.
When I am away from the hospital I am with family. I married my high school sweetheart and we have two sons. We have two dogs – a silly & playful border collie/pit/husky mix named Raven, and a sweet, cuddle-loving collie/hound mix named Capi. We also have very curious, playful, and talkative three-legged kitten name Abra.
Interview Qs
Our unique practice environment allows us to offer both outpatient care as well as advanced surgical procedures. When one of our patients is sick, we don’t need to send them off to another hospital for inpatient care or additional diagnostics – we have the capability to provide all of this at one location. We are also able to provide many of these options at a more affordable cost than many of the neighboring hospitals with similar capabilities. Keeping animals healthy and maintaining the bond between someone and their pet is at the forefront of our care. We are constantly pushing forward to expand and improve upon the care and treatments we offer so that we can help as many pets as we can.
Being able to follow our patients through their care and watching the bonds our team forms with them is an amazing thing. Seeing a pet reunite with their family after a difficult hospital stay is one of those experiences that remind us why we are here. Watching the treatment team become family with those that stay in hospital and providing care around the clock as if it were their own is a daily occurrence. Similarly, being able to take an injured patient and follow them from diagnosis to surgery and rehab and eventually watch them return to their happy, playful selves is such a rewarding experience. Being able to help every step of the way keeps our patients happy and it means that no matter what they need – from wellness care to life-saving emergency treatment – we will be here.
We are proud to offer many unique services at our hospital. Advanced orthopedic procedures (TPLO, TTA, fracture repair), minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, physical rehabilitation (including laser therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic care and water treadmill), advanced diagnostics (CT scanner, abdominal and thoracic ultrasound) are just some of the specialty services we provide.
