Blood Donor Requirements Are you curious to know if your dog could be a hero? To be eligible for our donor program, the potential donor must be healthy and between the ages of 1 and 7. We are looking for dogs that are over 50 pounds, up to date on core vaccines, currently on heartworm and flea and tick preventatives (year-round), and well-mannered during vet visits. The Wilson Veterinary Hospital Blood Bank ensures that every potential donor meets these stringent criteria to maintain the highest standards of safety and quality. In-House Blood Bank Did you know Wilson Veterinary Hospital maintains an in-house Blood Bank? Our specially trained technicians work hard to ensure we have blood products to provide life-saving transfusions to our critical patients in the hospital. The Wilson Veterinary Hospital Blood Bank is a vital resource, providing emergency blood transfusions for pets in need. Our blood bank is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by experts dedicated to saving lives.

Special Perks for Donors Our team offers many benefits to all of our active donors, including a free yearly heartworm test, CBCs (complete blood cell count), and well-pet exams. Our blood donors also receive a complementary nail trim on the day of donation. After the donation process, blood donors are presented with a bag of treats. Lastly and most importantly, you get to go home with your heroic dog knowing he or she saved a life. Specific Breeds and Blood Types Since a certain blood type is required to be a donor, the breeds we most commonly use for blood donations include German Shepherds, Boxers, Pit Bulls, Greyhounds, and some Mastiff breeds, as well as mixed breeds of the above. Our technicians at the Wilson Veterinary Hospital Blood Bank are skilled in identifying the appropriate blood types and matching donors with recipients to maximize the effectiveness of each donation.
